Disability Rights Coalition NS Welcomes Premier’s Apology

The DRC welcomes the Premier’s apology to persons with disabilities

The DRC welcomes the Premier’s apology to persons with disabilities as an important first step towards reconciliation with a community whose members have experienced extreme forms of systemic discrimination over decades.  This important gesture by the Premier comes at a key moment as the Province moves toward addressing & ending its practices and policies that lead to the discriminatory treatment.  Those changes will now be monitored by an independent, expert monitor over the next 5 years under the terms of an Interim Consent Order [see this link for the DRC overview of the terms of the Interim Consent Order].

The Premier’s words send a strong message that the Province is committed to taking all necessary action to address and, hopefully, end the discrimination and create a new disability support system based on human dignity and equality for persons with disabilities.
